I truly enjoyed this book! I laughed out loud during several parts- especially as Ruby talks to her chickens and has different adventures with them. It was very sad though when Ruby was remembering her grandpa at the bridge. I was also very sad when the chicks died- I was very relieved that at least one chick survived to ensure that life "does go on." I also enjoyed reading Eula and Ruby's letters back and forth. I thought their interactions were very funny, and it was interesting to see what events each character would include in these notes. The part about Ruby's mom canning vegetables reminded me of my mom. My brother, sister and I used to help her can tomatoes and pickles every year. A few questions:
Grandpa Garnet says people are like lemon drops because they are sweet and sour together. Do you agree with this? What is sweet and sour about Ruby? What do you think is something that makes you sweet? What may make you sour to someone else?
Ruby and Melba Jane both experience a loss, but they deal with it in different ways. Describe how each girl deals with her loss. Describe a time that you went through a loss, and tell how you dealt with it. What advice would you give Ruby or Melba Jane as they struggle to get through their loss?
What do you think Eula means when she says "life goes on?" How can you use this motto in your life?
How do you feel about Ruby stealing the chickens with Miss Eula? Do you think they were right to do this?
When Miss Eula says "life goes on" I think that she means that there is a time to do anything you want. Even though MIss Eula is going to Hawaii that does not mean that Ruby will never see Miss Eula again. I can use this motto in my life by thinking ahead the the great times I will have in the future. For example if I am at the beach and I really want to do something but I didn't I can look forward to the next time I go to the beach I can do that. - Jarrett
