Greetings from Nowhere by Barbara O'Connor

  1. I loved this book. I thought the author did a great job developing all her characters. This book made me very sad for Aggie- I was so relieved at the end when she didn't have to leave the motel. I could tell that she was lonely and really missed her husband, and I didn't think she would be happy anywhere else. I thought the name "Ugly" was so funny for the cat- but I was glad that the cat kept Aggie company (I love my cats- I know they are great companions.) The other characters made me feel sad too- I was sad that no one seemed to care about Kirby. I was sad that Loretta hadn't gotten to know her mother. And I was sad that Willow missed her mother and her old house. However, Barbara O'Connor did a great job of making me feel happy for all of the characters by the end of the story- and I loved reading about how each character began to change and grow. Some questions for discussion:

*If you could choose somewhere to go to start a new life, as the characters in this story did, where would you go and why?

*How do Kirby, Loretta, and Willow change throughout the story? Which character was your favorite? Why?

*What difference did each of the residents of the motel make for Aggie?

*How were Kirby's mother and Loretta's mother different?

*Why do you think Willow's father was in such a hurry to move?

*Why does Kirby take Loretta's pin? Why does he return it?

*What is the significance of Loretta's charm bracelet? Do you have any belongings that are very meaningful to you? What are they- and why do they mean so much to you?

  3. The significance of of Loretta's charm bracelet is that her mom owned it and her mom died and Loretta loved her mom. My very important belonging is the flag that was on my great grandpas casket after he died. That is important to me because he was in the military and I never met him. - Jarrett Kidd

  7. The significance of Loretta's charm bracelet is that the bracelet used to belong to her birth mom. It was also important because Loretta really liked her mom, even though her mom died. She likes the bracelet so much, that she wanted to go to the places that the charms symbolized. This is why the bracelet is significant to Loretta. My important belonging to me is the game ball I got when I pitched 18 strikeouts when I played with Seagrove. This is so important to me because it was the first game that I have ever pitched all 6 innings. This is why that specific game ball is my most important belonging.

  8. I would go to Georgia because most of my family lives there. Another reason is because it has lots of open roads. I love Georgia because it has lots of places to play with my sisters and have fun with my family. When i go to Georgia to viset my family it is so much fun because we get to collect pincons to make little projects.
