The Year of the Dog by Grace Lin

  1. I truly enjoyed this book. It was very interesting to read how the little girl struggled with her identity. One of my favorite parts was when she was describing how her family celebrated traditional American holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. I laughed out loud as I imagined Pacy's dad running outside in his slippers and throwing the Christmas lights on the bush. I also thought the little illustrations added a lot to the story. I found it fascinating to read about the different Chinese customs as well- such as dying the eggs red when Albert was born.

Do you think it would be confusing to have two names like Pacy/Grace? If you were her, would you stick to one name? Which name and why?

Why do you think Pacy's mom tells her so many stories about her childhood? Does anyone in your family tell stories like this?

Grace doesn't like the food at Melody's house and everyone thinks she is sick. What do you do if someone offers you something to eat that you don't like?

Pacy doesn't win the blue ribbon like she wanted for the science fair. Why do you think the author wrote this that way? Have you ever been disappointed like Pacy? What happened and how did you react?

Pacy is teased at the TAC for being too American, but she refuses to tell anyone about it. Why do you think she did that? What would you do if someone teased you?

Are there any special holidays or traditions that your family celebrates? How are these the same or different from the celebrations described in the book?

Yes I think it will be confusing to people to have two names. so yes I think it would be confusing to have two names. If I was Pacy/Grace I would definitely stick to one name.I would chose the name Grace because more people like that name and also I think more people know that name at school then any other place.

  4. If I went over to a friends house, and they had a type of food I didn't like then I would just say" thank you for the food". Also I would say "Thank you but no thank you for the food that you have given me, but I'm not hungry''. I will also try the food before I say '' I don't like the food'' say '' I love the taste of your food.

  5. If I had 2 names I would go with my fake name because people would be used to my fake name than my real name. PS if hade a fake name it would be Connor. I would want my real name a secret.

    1. Grace's mom learned how to play the piano because of all the practice Grace's mom had when she was little

  12. I think that Pacey's mom told her stories to get her through tough problems. My whole family tells me and my cousins stories (mostley my uncle) about their childhood.

  13. Nobody realy tells storys about there childhood in my family. I think that her mom tells her all of those storys because they can help her in her later life. When my mom tells storys about her chiledhood i think they are very cool! I wonder if she thinks her moms storys are cool too?

  16. When someone offers me something that I don't like I eat the other foods on the plate and I eat a little of the food I don't like so I can be polite.

  18. Whenever someone offers me something to eat that I dislike, I try to force myself to eat just a few bites because I don't want to be rude or impolite For example, a couple of weeks ago I ate at my church. They had a variety of different foods that smelled really good, but tasted really bad. Everyone in my family said I should try the baked potato with cheese, but I already knew that I don't like baked potatoes. Anyway, I eventually tried the evil potato that I knew I disliked, but it was so horrible, that I had to walk myself to the nearest bathroom and splash water on my face to clear my thoughts on that evil Dr. Potato. This is what I do when someone offers me something that I dislike.

  19. I think the reason that Pacy's Mom tells her so many stories about her childhood is because to help Pacy get through tough times. Like when she was only twainese girl at her school.

  20. Grace doesn't like the food at Melody's house and everyone thinks she is sick. What do you do if someone offers you something to eat that you don't like? I would eat it and pretend to actually like it, when I really don't.
