I enjoyed this book, but it was not one of my favorites. I really liked Homer's character though- of course I fell in love with a character who loves books, libraries, and maps! I felt sorry for Homer's dad since he seemed so overworked and tired. I felt even worse for him when I found out he had given up his dreams to become a goat farmer. I thought it was really funny when Edith threw up the book. I was glad that Homer was able to keep Dog, and although I'm more of a cat person, I enjoyed reading about the silly things that Dog did- like eating the magazines in the library.
Some questions for discussion:
*Compare and contrast city life to Homer's life on the goat farm.
*Homer and Gwendolyn run away when they can't get their dad to agree with them. Do you think this was a good decision? Why or why not? What would you have done in their situation?
*How is Homer similar to Uncle Drake? How is he different?
*If you were Homer, would you sell your most prized possession to rebuild the library? Why or why not? What might you do instead?
*Were you surpised at home Homer's dad reacted when Homer came back? How do you think your parents would react if you ran away from home?
*What is the importance of the gold coin that Homer finds on Dog's collar?
*If you were writing this story, what changes would you make to the plot?
The gold coin that Homer finds on Dog's collar is really important because it gives him membership to L.OS.T., the the group of treasure hunters that sends Homer on a big adventure that really affected the story.
I would chance the tittle insted of sells like dog smells like an adventre because this story is all about an adventre and a mytery in this story then that is why I think this tittle sould chanced.
