A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park

  1. I have already read this book twice as well- I had to read it the first time for a Masters class I was taking. The first time I read this book I cried. It is incomprehensible to me that people are living like Nya- today- in our lifetime. This book reminded me of Greg Mortenson's books- Three Cups of Tea and Stones into Schools. In these books, Greg raises money to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan- places where very few children have access to schools- and where girls are not allowed to go to school. I loved the ending of "A Long Walk to Water." I was moved by the way the characters meet at the end, especially since they were from rival tribes. These books really make me think about how much I take for granted. A few questions:

How do you think Salva felt as he was running away from his home?

Describe what a day in Nya's life is like.

How does Salva's group work together to build the canoes? Do you think this was a good strategy?

How does Salva's uncle help Salva get across the desert? Has there ever been a time in your life when you have thought this way? What challenges do you think you may have in the future where this way of thinking could be useful?

As Salva's group is crossing the desert, the come across another group of people who are dying of thirst. Some people in Salva's group share their water, and some do not. What would you have done in this situation and why? What did you think of the people who shared their water? What did you think of the people who didn't share?

Describe what Salva's experiences were like in the refugee camps.

Imagine that you are Salva- about to take your first steps into America. What would you think/feel/say?

Were you surprised to find out what Salva's "project" was?

How will Salva's project change Nya's life?

If you were Nya, what would you say to Salva for bringing water to your village?

Describe how you felt while reading this book as well as how you felt when you finished reading it.

  2. Last Question:
When I was reading this book I felt that her life was misserable and she had to go get water every single day!

After I was reading this book I felt relieved that they finally had [Fresh] water to drink and that theyb were safe and wouldnt get sick as often as they used to!!

  3. When I read about Salva's project, I was not that surprised because he basically lived his life not having good, clean water to use daily. He wanted people that had it worse than him to not have the kind of life that Salva had. Up to when he went to America, of course. He wanted people everywhere to have clean water and live like most people in other places of the world. I liked his project because he showed a lot of empathy towards people who were less fortunate than he was when he was younger. I just really liked his project, but I was not surprised when he came up with the project.

  4. I like long walk to water because it is a very emotional book that makes you sad and happy like this for example salva's uncle is killed by rebels while there camping in the desert for the night and all of sudden four rebels come running and ask for all the valuables and ask salva uncle if he is a rebel then tie him up to tree then shoot him three times and run off in the distant.
